Last Saturday I was speeding down Route 202 in Jersey with the new Atomic Bitchwax CD blasting out my stereo speakers. Just as I crossed the Ringoes city line, red and white flashing lights lit up my rear view - damn, the law! Now, I'm not entirely sure that I can blame my ticket on the Atomic Bitchwax, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been driving so fast had I been listening to classical, an Ibiza Chillout CD or talk radio. The Atomic Bitchwax make the kind of raw, rock 'n' roll music that gets me in trouble every time - they make me speed, abuse, drink, chase women and get all kinds of rowdy, uppity and in your face - and I love it.
The Atomic Bitchwax is all about throwing back some beers, getting high, tearing down route 36 in the 8-cylinder domestic car of your choice, stumbling into the Tradewinds against your better judgment around 1:30am, drinking a lot more, ducking the security guard's punches, meeting a lady and freakin' out on the beach and stoppin' by the Windmill for some cheese fries just in time to pass out on the door step of the Brighton Bar.
The Atomic Bitchwax is a side project of two of my favorite Jersey musicians: Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell and Godspeed bassist Chris Kosnik. Add to the mix drummer Keith Ackerman and you have one of the best "stoner rock" bands in existence -- Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Karma To Burn, Clutch, Monster Magnet & the Atomic Bitchwax. What truly makes Bitchwax so great is their pure, honest, raw, no-frills, rock 'n' roll sound. They bring me back to the late 80s, early 90s before Monster Magnet signed to a major label and Godspeed had me freaking out, drunk like a motherfucker, hanging upside down from the rafters of the Melody Bar.
The Spit Blood EP is more or less a collection of Bitchwax rarities to hold fans over between albums. The EP includes a cover of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Liquor Queen - an alternate version of a song released on a previous album, Black Trans-Am & U Want I Should - two songs recorded many years ago, but never released and three new songs.
The Bitchwax cover of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is as raw and dirty as you'd want it too be - very faithful to the original - there's really no other way to cover the song without committing heavy metal blasphemy. The rest of the CD is all about the rocket-hot, space-warp guitar leads & bass riffs you would expect from Bitchwax - the kind of CD you put in your player and leave in there until the very end. One song seems to blend with the next, forming the perfect soundtrack for your next trip to Saturn or the liquor store.
The Spit Blood EP is more than a 7 song CD - it also includes a "Web site" that features 45 MP3s of studio outtakes, 5 video clips of the band in the studio, an interview, session notes, a documentary and a discography. Other bands talk about the special bonuses that come with their CDs, but this is the ultimate fan experience - if you like the band, you buy this CD.
