Traveling Speed

By Marcus Pan

The following optional system simplifies the rules for mounted and on-foot travel. For travel by foot, use a base 5 or 10 miles per day (see Table I.). A D% is then rolled. 01%-50% indicates a subtraction and 51%-100% indicates an addition (to the base amount). A D6 is then used to determine the amount of difference from the base amount.

Mounted travel is similar, using the base amounts of 10 or 20 according to Table I. The difference in this case is determined using a D12. The final number is the total miles traveled that day. This simple computation should be performed for each day of travel for variety (remember to halve the final amount for foraging characters).

TABLE I.

LAND TYPE BASE ON FOOT BASE ON MOUNT
Clear/Plains 10 20
Rough/Hills 10 20
Mountains 5 10
Marsh/Swamp 5 10
Roads/Trails 10 20
